The Tsunami of 2009
The Tsunami of 2009 I teach/facilitate weekly workshops to job seekers on topics ranging from improving resumes to networking. I love what I do and I am incredibly grateful to have job that allows me to help other people. Something really scary happened this week in my workshops. I had 32 people inthe resume workshop and 31 people in the interviewing workshop, compared to 8 people last year at this time in the same workshops. The numbers grew overnight. There they were, packed into a room on a Monday morning, 32 bodies looking for work. I knew there had been lay offs over the past few months, but hadnt seen people coming to workshops. I suppose I was hoping that most of those laid off had secured jobs quickly. Sadly, what I think happened was that they took the holiday season off. They probably said to themselves, after the New Year, I will really kick my job search into high gear. They didnt ask for help sooner because they probably didnt think they needed it. I cant be sure about this hypothesis, and it may not be applicable to all 32 people in that room. What I do know is that the job market is incredibly flooded with people looking for work. There is a severe competition. With extreme conditions, we need to take extreme measuresI wish I knew what that looked like The realist has spoken.

7 Tips For Planning A Holiday Office Party - Work It Daily
7 Tips For Planning A Holiday Office Party - Work It Daily Ah, holiday office partiesâ"too often the most dreaded ârewardâ of the year. These events can range from stressful to a booze-fueled lawsuit waiting to happen when not planned properly. However, if you take the time to thoughtfully consider the needs of your employees and craft a party consonant with your companyâs culture, you are sure to create an event your employees will remember for positive reasons! Here are seven tips for planning a holiday office party: 1. Assign A Team Every workplace has employees who would rather scrub the toilets with toothbrushes than plan birthday parties for their own children, let alone their co-workers. Do not attempt to encourage these people to participate by assigning them to the holiday party planning team. This will not be fun for anyone. But donât go at it alone, eitherâ"even if you work for a small business, multiple event planners will allow the event to be the result of multiple perspectives and will make everyoneâs party workload more manageable. Look for eager volunteers and those who have shown they can both organize and enjoy both their work and their play. 2. Choose A Theme Choosing a theme for your holiday office party will make the planning process much easier, as there are particular foods, activities, and locations associated with every theme. Again, be sure to consider the diversity of the employees in the workplace. In other words, donât cop out and throw a Christmas-themed party. Not everyone celebrates Christmas, and frankly, itâs been overplayed. If your employees tend to be open-minded or silly, perhaps try a costume party? A 1970s or 1980s-themed holiday party could yield some ridiculous outfits. Costume parties can also be great for parties that welcome your employeesâ entire families. 3. Make A Reasonable Budget Holiday parties can be quite the expense, so make sure you know how much money that you have to spend and what you plan to spend it on. Your budget can help you determine an appropriate menu and venue, and also help you decide whether itâs reasonable to foot the cost of alcohol. This is another area where it is important to consider your employeesâ"a holiday party isnât a substitute for a bonus, so if they arenât getting a bonus this year, avoid an exceptionally opulent event. You donât want them to think that the companyâs money could have been better spent. 4. Choose A Location If you plan to hold the holiday party at the office itself, make sure that you budget enough for food and decorations to compensate for the lack of special location. Though ballrooms and bars can be great party locations, it can be nice to see the office cast in a different light. The key is to make the environment suggest that the event is a reward, not an obligation. 5. Skip The Potluck Especially if you decide to throw your party at the office. Potlucks can be a wonderful way to get your employees to share and participate, but if this is what you do for every event, youâre likely to have employees that want to eat something they didnât have to cook. Hiring a local caterer can make your office party special without having to spring for an expensive venue. Better yet, many local food trucks are willing to cater events, and nothing makes a winter carnival better than a piping hot local lamb burger. 6. Welcome Families If you fear that your holiday party could inspire behavior so debaucherous that it could inspire conflict, have your employees invite their families along. If your employees are raising families, this gives them an additional opportunity to spend time with them and will help you to choose themed activities that arenât centered on drinking. Cash bars can have the same effect in terms of limiting your companyâs alcohol expenses, but cash bars donât acknowledge that your employees have lives and families outside of the office. 7. Plan Activities Nothing is worse than walking into a decorated room with tables full of food and employees hiding in every possible corner. As awful as icebreaker games can be, you need to find a way to inspire your employees to interact with one another. âBuild-your-ownâ bars are a great way to give your employees something to do. A slide show of memorable moments from the year can give shy employees something to focus on, while an arts-and-crafts station will occupy kids if they are welcome. Everyone enjoys a photo booth, which will allow employees to show off their holiday garb and give you images to post on your company blog or at next yearâs holiday party. Enjoy this article? Ladies, Lets Help Each Other Out! Lessons From Gwen Ifill
Ladies, Lets Help Each Otzu sichbeibei Out Lessons From Gwen Ifill Whether or elend you celebrate Christmas, we hope youre enjoying a peaceful day off from work today. Since most of you are getting a much needed chance to unwind, we wed like to take a moment to offer some food for thought. We hear a lot about the importance of women helping women. And on our career paths and in the workplace, where we consistently face gender-based discrimination - however veiled or overt it may be - it is particularly essential that we commit to understanding and supporting each other. But what does this camaraderie look like? Gwen Ifill, a trailblazing journalist who passed away last month, shows us just that. When we learned of Ifills death, we were deeply saddened, touched, and inspired. Like the vast majority of you, we did not know her personally. Yet wed watched her hold her own in conversations and spheres largely dominated by men. Wed seen her do the difficult work of reporting with brilliance, precision and grace. And after her death, we learned that in addition to paving the way for many black female journalists, Ifill took the time to personally mentor and build friendships with so many others in her field. She welches a trailblazer for women and journalists of color and she was also a mentor to me, NBC News Correspondent Kirsten Welker said in an NBC News article. When I first arrived in Washington, D.C. a novice to covering national politics she carved out time from her busy schedule to have dinner with me. She gave me advice and answered my flurry of questions about how to succeed here.I was so touched that she would take so much time to invest in my growth, Welk continued. I will never forget that or the indelible mark she has left on journalism. She was simply the best.In the same NBC News piece, Michel Martin, weekend host of All Things Considered, reflected on her relationship with Ifill Ive know Gwen for most of my adult life and thus most of my professional li fe which is why I have a hard time conceiving of being a grown black woman without her in the world, and being a journalist without her in somebodys newsroom. She was everything a great journalist, a constant friend, an amazing godmother.Yamiche Alcindor of The New York Times told NBC News, Gwen mentored me and was someone I could turn to for advice both as a journalist covering politics and as a black woman navigating newsrooms. She would take the time to watch me on TV and give me feedback even though she had so much of her own work to do ... Ill miss her dearly as she taught me so much about being strong, being tough and taking the time to help out journalists younger than me.The article includes dozens of such statements, revealing that Ifills motivations extended well beyond her own career. She took the time to foster a sense of community and encouragement for those who were seeking it (and perhaps even for those who were not) - and she inspired countless other women to follow in her footsteps, even in the face of adversity. Most of us are not widely recognized by the public. Its easy to feel like our words and actions cant possibly make as big as an impact as Ifills have. But we can assure you that every woman you do take the time to connect with, whether or not professionally, will appreciate and recognize how it made her feel - and will be all the more inclined to pay it forward and offer her own support to the other women in her life.Fairygodboss is committed to improving the workplace and lives of women.Join us by reviewing your employer
